The Hunter Coast is a region located in New South Wales, Australia, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Hunter River to the west. The area is rich in natural resources, wildlife, and a diverse landscape that has made it an important location throughout history.

Indigenous History

The land that makes up Hunter Coast has been home to Indigenous communities for thousands of years. The Worimi, Awabakal and Worimi/ Birpai people are the traditional custodians who have lived in the area. The Indigenous people were able to sustain themselves with the rich natural resources of the region by using the land and sea as their source of food and other resources.

The Indigenous people have a rich and vibrant culture, which they have maintained over the years. They have passed down their lifeways, customs, and traditions through storytelling, music, dance, and artwork. Many of their traditions are still evident today despite colonization and modernization.

Colonial History

The Hunter region was explored and mapped by non-Indigenous people from the early 1790s but was not settled until 1820. The first European settlement in the region was in Newcastle, and soon after, other small towns were established along the coast.

Early European settlers harvested the natural resources, such as timber and coal, to fuel the growth of the region. The coal mines that were set up in the region stimulated a period of development, and the mining towns of Newcastle, Wallsend, and Kurri Kurri were established.

The development of the region led to the construction of the first railway line in Australia, which went from Newcastle to Maitland. The railway was used to move coal from the mines to Newcastle Harbour for export around the world.

The 20th Century

During the twentieth century, the region's economy changed, with a shift away from mining, manufacturing and towards tourism, agriculture, and healthcare sectors. With the increased demand for coal, the Newcastle coal industry grew, and by the 1960s, had become the largest exporter of coal in the world.

The region's coastal areas became popular seaside destinations and grew to become cities such as Port Stephens and Coffs Harbour. Large scale agricultural activities such as dairy farming and wineries were also established along the coast.
